By way of introduction to this short-form blog series, why “SNPits”? SNPits takes the concept (and pronunciation) of “snippets”, hence the short-form format, and combines it with the science reference to SNPs, or single nucleotide polymorphisms.
In short, single nucleotide polymorphisms contribute to genetic variation between individuals at the level of changes in single nucleotides, or the building blocks of our DNA. Many SNPs have no effect on health, but some have been shown to impact an individual’s risk for certain diseases or response to certain medications.
SNPs refer to unique variations among individuals, and SNPits will be a space where I post about my unique experiences as a graduate student getting her PhD in Biological and Biomedical Science.
